Seven PPS schools have earned the 2024-2025 Purple Star Award. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children recognize schools as “Purple Star” honorees when they have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families.

Tidewater Consortium Secures $9 Million Teacher Quality Partnership Grant from USDOE

The Tidewater Consortium, consisting of Isle of Wight County Schools, Portsmouth Public Schools, and Suffolk Public Schools in collaboration with Norfolk State University and University of Maryland, has been awarded approximately $9 million through the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This significant funding will directly address the region’s ongoing teacher shortage and empower staff members to become future educational leaders.

At the direction of Executive Order 33 from Governor Glenn Youngkin, the School Board of the City of Portsmouth, at its Sept. 26 meeting, approved a cell phone-free education policy for Portsmouth Public Schools.
